Resolution
WHEREAS, a major finding of the Comprehensive Master Plan for the
Elderly, commissioned by the 1974 State Legislature, indicates that
the most pressing problem facing the elderly is retirement income which
assures a decent standard of living;.and
WHEREAS, this concern is alarming and depressing since our Nation's
elderly worked hard in their productive years so that subsequent
generations could enjoy the fruits of their labors; and
WHEREAS, Social Security benefits are the chief source of income
for the elderly, however, inflation has eroded the purchasing power and
has forced many of our elderly to lower their standard of living; and
WHEREAS, there has been a move at the Nation's Capitol to eliminate
the Social Security cost of living adjustment and to tax one-half of the
Social Security benefits as income, such an act results in imposing
additional hardships upon the elderly.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it opposes any move to reduce or tax Social Security
benefits which our Nation's elderly depend upon for a decent standard
of living.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit copies of this resolution to the Honorable Jimmy Carter,
President of the United States; the Honorable Daniel K. Inouye,
U. S. Senator; the Honorable Spark M. Matsunaga, U. S. Senator; the
Honorable Daniel K. Akaka, U. S. Congressman and the Honorable Cecil
Heftel, U. S. Congressman.
