HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 599 Draft 01 1976-1980County of Hawaii --State of Hawaii Resolution WHEREAS, a major finding of the Comprehensive Master Plan for the Elderly, commissioned by the 1974 State Legislature, indicates that the most pressing problem facing the elderly is retirement income which assures a decent standard of living;.and WHEREAS, this concern is alarming and depressing since our Nation's elderly worked hard in their productive years so that subsequent generations could enjoy the fruits of their labors; and WHEREAS, Social Security benefits are the chief source of income for the elderly, however, inflation has eroded the purchasing power and has forced many of our elderly to lower their standard of living; and WHEREAS, there has been a move at the Nation's Capitol to eliminate the Social Security cost of living adjustment and to tax one-half of the Social Security benefits as income, such an act results in imposing additional hardships upon the elderly. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it opposes any move to reduce or tax Social Security benefits which our Nation's elderly depend upon for a decent standard of living. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii transmit copies of this resolution to the Honorable Jimmy Carter, President of the United States; the Honorable Daniel K. Inouye, U. S. Senator; the Honorable Spark M. Matsunaga, U. S. Senator; the Honorable Daniel K. Akaka, U. S. Congressman and the Honorable Cecil Heftel, U. S. Congressman.
