WHEREAS, in 1930 in the Old waiakea Town, Tomohide Okuyama opened the Okuyama Meat Market which then occupied 500 square feet of space and had two employees; and WHEREAS, undaunted by the serious damage to his business when the tidal wave struck on April 1, 1946, Mr. Okuyama expanded the Okuyama Meat Market to include groceries to meet the daily needs of our Big Island people; and WHEREAS, from the inauspicious beginning in 1930, the first major expansion began in 1953 when Sure Save Super Market opened in Waiakea in the building currently housing the Hawaii County Waiakea Recreation Center; and WHEREAS, the Sure Save Super Market Store has grown to seven outlets and 200 employees who serve our residents throughout the Big Island at outlets such as Mall Foods and Gourmet Hut in Hilo, Parker Ranch Shopping Center in Waimea, Kealakekua Ranch Center and Warehouse Super Market in Kona, and the WikiWiki markets in Waiakea Homesteads and Keaau Village; and WHEREAS, after 50 years the management of Sure Save Stores continues to offer its customers quality products and a wide selection of variety commodities. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it congratulates the management and employees of the SURE SAVE SUPER MARKET STORES during its '50th-, Anniversary and wishes them continued success. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii send a true copy of this resolution to Mr. Tom Okuyama, President, Mrs. Kiyoko Okuyama, Vice President, and Mr. Carl Okuyama, Vice President of the Sure Save Super Market Stores.
