Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the entry level class in the Firefighting series. This class differs from that of Fire Equipment Operator in that the Fire Fighter responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls to protect life and property and is not regularly assigned to drive or operate firefighting equipment; whereas the Fire Equipment Operator regularly operates and maintains major firefighting or search and rescue equipment. This class differs from that of Fire Search and Rescue Squadman in that the Fire Fighter is primarily engaged in firefighting activities, which may include life-saving, and may occasionally perform search and rescue work; whereas the Fire Search and Rescue Squadman performs life-saving, search and rescue work as a primary, regular assignment. Distinguishing Characteristics: This class differs from that of Fire Fighter in that the Fire Equipment Operator operates and maintains major firefighting equipment as a primary and regular assignment; whereas the Fire Fighter is primarily engaged in firefighting activities. This class differs from that of Fire Lieutenant in that the Fire Equipment Operator operates and maintains major firefighting equipment as a primary, regular assignment; whereas the Fire Lieutenant regul$rly relieves the Fire Captain and Fire Equipment Operator on their days off and other absences. License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license, a PUC Doctor's Certificate and an Advanced First Aid Certificate. Knowledge of: the operation and care of assigned equipment; the principles of hydraulics and mechanics as related to pumping apparatus and aerial ladders; firefighting methods and operations; breathing apparatus and resuscitation equipment; first aid principles, practices and techniques; fire safety and prevention practices, procedures, rules and regulations; traffic laws and ordinances; the geography of the assigned area and the location of streets and fire hydrants; departmental rules and regulations. Ability to: drive and operate heavy motorized equipment skillfully and safely; analyze firefighting and emergency situations and adopt an effective course of action; read and understand technical materials; understand and follow oral and written instructions. Special Working Conditions: irregular hours, shift and weekend work, and exposure to hazardous and obnoxious conditions as required.
