T,,HERrAS, Father William Desmond, former pastor of St. Joseph's
Church in Hilo, has been assigned the responsibilities of Area
Coordinator of Hawaii and the Far East for the Maryknoll Fathers;
and
WHEREAS, Father Desmond's assignment entails coordinating the
overall research and planning efforts of the Maryknoll Fathers for
these two geographic areas, and thus, plays an even more important
role in furthering the development of Maryknoll fathers programs;
and
WHEREAS, Father Desmond received his philosophical and
theological studies at Maryknoll and was ordained there in June„
194:3; and
1F:IEREA3, his initial assignment following ordination was to
St. Joseph's Church for three years, followed by pastorships for
three years on the mainland, four years at Holy Rosary Church in
Pahala, four years at St. Benedict's Church in Honaunau, and nine
years on Oahu on two separate assignments; and
WHEREAS, in addition to being pastor of St.. Joseph's since
1971, Father Desmond has held distinguished positions such as Dean
of the Catholic Clergy on Hawaii, Diocesan Counselor, and Maryknoll
Justice and Peace Coordinator.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL'OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWFII that i% admires and reveres Father Tlilliami.Desmond for
his 31 years of unselfish service and faithful dedication to the
people of the Big Island and abroad.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Father Desmond find continued
success and recognition as he furthers his career in pastoral work
in his newest capacity.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit a true copy of this resolution to Father V lliam Desmond
at his Aloha -Party at the Seven Seas Luau House on September 6,-1-979.
