A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING THE SUPPORT AND COMMITMENT OF THE HAWAII COUNTY
COUNCIL AS HOST COUNTY FOR THE NACO YEAR 2001 WESTERN INTERSTATE REGION
CONFERENCE
WHEREAS, the National Association of Counties (NACo) is currently examining sites for its Year 2001
Western Interstate Region (WIR) Conference; and
WHEREAS, each year the conference attracts some 300 to 500 visitors who utilize approximately 1500 hotel
room-nights for the conference; and
WHEREAS, the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Kohala Coast of the Island of Hawaii offers a unique and
superb showcase, which can easily accommodate all of the convention needs within its property; and
WHEREAS, hosting the conference on the island of Hawaii would provide a welcome opportunity to improve
the local economy through tourism; and
WHEREAS, in proposing the Hilton Waikoloa Village as a conference site in May 2001, a host county needs to
be identified; and
WHEREAS, in becoming the host county, the County of Hawaii will accept certain responsibilities which
include:
Providing and hosting a welcome reception and dinner for approximately 250 people associated with the
NACo and WIR Board of Directors; and
Providing and hosting a conference reception for approximately 500 people with heavy pupus (hors
d'oeuvres) and beverages; and
Providing and staffing promotional booths at the NACo WIR, Annual, and Legislative Conferences
immediately preceding the May 2001 WIR Conference; and
WHEREAS, because this commitment of Hawaii County resources begins in and extends beyond the current
term of the Hawaii County Council, it is best to formally express the intent and direction of this body.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it
herewith expresses its commitment as a host county and its support for the Hilton Waikoloa Village Resort as
the proposed NACo Year 2001 Western Interstate Region (WIR) Conference site.
WHEREAS, be it further resolved that copies of this resolution be provided to the National Association of
Counties; the Hawaii State Association of Counties; the Honorable Stephen Yamashiro, Mayor of the County of
Hawaii; the Hawaii Visitors & Convention Bureau; the Kona Kohala Resort Association; and the Hilton
Waikoloa Village.
