HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 054 Draft 02 1998-2000 COUNl"Y OF HAWAII STATE OF HAWAII RESOLUTION NO. 54 99 (Draft 2) A RESOLUTION RELATING TO THE CONTROL OF MICONIA IN HAWAII. WHEREAS, the State Department of Agriculture recognized the dangerous nature of Miconia calvescens by placing it on the Noxious Weed List, thereby encouraging funding and participation in control efforts; and WHEREAS, Miconia has demonstrated its invasive nature by dominating neazly 70% of Tahiti's native forest lands; and WHEREAS, the lazgest Miconia population in the State is located on the Island of Hawaii, and contaminates between 10,000 and 20,000 acres of land; and WHEREAS, Miconia contamination threatens our islands' agricultural production, and forested watersheds, and endangers native forests and their endemic plant and animal inhabitants; and WHEREAS, the County of Hawaii has supported "Operation Miconia" financially for the past three years with a total grant of $181,000; and WHEREAS, the effort will have to be sustained for six to nine years until the viability of previously matured seeds has passed. NOW, TIiEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it encourages the State Legislature to appropriate $175,000 of supplemental funds for "Operation Miconia" in Hawaii County. BE [T FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council also urges the State Department of Land and Natural Resources and the State Department of Agriculture to continue and increase agency support for the field control efforts on the Big Island. BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii transmit copies of this resolution to the Honorable Benjamin Cayetano, Governor of the State of Hawaii; the Honorable Norman Mizuguchi, President of the Senate of the State of Hawaii; the Honorable Calvin Say, Speaker of the House of the State of Hawaii; the Honorable Senators Lorraine Inouye. Andrew Levin and David Matsuura; the Honorable Representatives Jerry Chang, Robert Herkes. Eric Hamakawa, Jim Rath, Dwight Takamine and Paul Whalen; Mr. Tim Johns, Chairman of the Board of Land and Natural Resources, and James Nakatani, Chairman of the Department of Agriculture.
