RESOLUTION NO.
WHEREAS, on Saturday, December 8, 1979, at Orlando, Florida,
an historic achievement was attained in the annals of collegiate
sports in the State of Hawaii when the University of Hawaii -Hilo
Vulcans Women's volleyball team won the Association of Intercollegiate
Athletics for Women (AIAW) National Volleyball Championship; and
tTHEREAS, this prestigious title comes only after the Vulcans'
second year of competition at this level and is the first major
national athletic championship ever won by any collegiate team in the
state; and
WKEREAS, the Vulcans' were so disciplined and so very well
coached that in the tournament play amongst fifteen other teams they
went undefeated winning seven consecutive matches;•and
WHEREAS, added recognition was bestowed upon the Vulcan players
when Lvndell Lindsey and Sweetie Lindsey were named to the all-star
second team; Vetoann Baler, Kawehi Kaaa and Glennie Adams claimed
spots on the all-star first team; and Kawehi Kaaa topped off all
honors by being named co -winner of the MVP award as well as being
nominated as the intercollegiate volleyball player of the year; and
IMEREAS, this landmark achievement was a culmination of dedi-
cation, teamwork, excellent coaching, and the immeasurable moral
support and prayers from many people, making this well-earned
recognition a victory for the people of the State of Hawaii.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it proudly commends the University of Hawaii -Hilo
Women's Volleyball Team for an outstanding season and for the
honor and glory they won for themselves, the University of Hawaii -
Hilo and our community.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
is instructed to remit copies of this resolution along with its
wishes for continued excellence in athletic competition to co -captains
Cheryl Ching and Lyndell Lindsey; team members Glennie Adams,
Vetoann Baker, Tammy Brown, Carla Carpenter, Lei Colburn, Pauahi Ioane,
Kawehi Kaaa, Charlene Kahuanui, Enola Gay Lindsey, F.die Manzano,
and Randi Spector; Head Coach Sharon Peterson; Assistant Coach
Richard Tiogangco; Athletic Director Ramon Goya; Chancellor Dr. Stephen
Mitchell and President Fujio Matsuda.
