WHEREAS, at a ceremony held in the Office of the Japanese Foreign
.Ministry in Tokyo, Japan, in October 1979, Edward T. Fukunaga was
awarded the prestigious Japanese Order of the Sacred Treasure, Fifth
Class; and
WHEREAS, this esteemed honor is decreed by the Emperor. of Japan
to people who have provided extraordinary services towards the
development and the well being of the nation of Japan; and
WHEREAS, Edward T,. Fukunaga who is the retired superintendent of
the Kona Branch experiment station of the University of Hawaii College
of Tropical Agriculture, has over the years shared his expertise in
agriculture with over twenty countries throughout Latin America, the
Caribbean, the Pacific Basin, Southeast Asia and Japan; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Fukunaga's reputation as a knowledgeable inter-
national consultant in the field of agriculture has been and continues
to be recognized.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII, that it also acknowledges these achievements and, more
importantly, the goodwill he has created with many nations.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
be instructed to remit a copy of this resolution to Edward T. Fukunaga
and to the Kona Hongwanji Mission and the Kainaliu Machi Kumiai,
sponsors of ar"testimonial dinner to be held on December 9, 1979,
along with the Council's commendations for being the recipient of the
coveted Japanese Order of the Sacred Treasure, Fifth Class.
