RESOLUTION NO. 549
WHEREAS, the year 1980 commemorates the 80th Anniversary of
the *migration of the Okinawan people to Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, the State Legislature established the Okinawan
80th Anniversary Celebration Commission to organize and coordinate
a state-wide celebration; and
WHEREAS, Governor Junji. Nishime of Okinawa and a contingency
of twenty-four government officials visiting and participating in
the ceremonies and festivities will be on the Big Island on Wednesday
and Thursday to take part in the local celebrations; and
NTHEREAS, the first group of Okinawan immigrants who arrived on
the China Maru on January 8, 1900, and began their settlement on the
Ewa Plantation were relatively latecomers to the social environment;
and
WHEREAS, in a short span of 80 years the Okinawan immigrants
worked hard and in close unity toward the establishment of the
Okinawan society as a significant part of the ethnic culture within
the State of Hawaii,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF TETE COUNTY
OE' HAWAII that it extends its fullest congratulations to the
Okinawan people and the Okinawan 80th Anniversary Celebration
Commission and welcomes the Honorable Junji Nishime, Governor of
Okinawa, and his contingency of government officials to the Big
Island of Hawaii.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Okinawan community be encouraged
to continue in their efforts toward preserving and sharing their
heritage with the people of the State of Hawaii.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit true copies of this resolution to the Honorable Junji
Nishime, Governor of Okinawa; Mrs. Shizuko Akami.ne, Commissioner
and Vice -Chairwoman of. the Okinawan 80th Anniversary Celebration
Commission, State of Hawaii; Dr. Harry Urasaki, President of the
Hawaii Shima Okinawa {enjin Rai; and Mrs. Nancy Nakaishi, President
of Hui Okinawa.
