WHEREAS, the ship.H gh Flyer arrived in Hawaii carrying 337
Portuguese men, women and children from St. Michale, the Azores on
January 24, 1880; and
VIHEREAS., these settlers constituted the first large group of
Azorean immigrants to Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, Hawaii's citizens of Azorean ancestry have contributed
greatly to the prosperity of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, men and women of Azorean ancestry,, along with their
brothers and sisters of Madeiran and mainland Portuguese ancestry
have distinguished themselves through their diligent work., their
noble religious and social values, their warmth and good humor,
their outstanding ability to live in harmony with all other groups
in the Islands, and their professional excellence in many fields;
and
WHEREAS, men and women of Azorean ancestry have, along .with all
of Hawaii's people of Portuguese descent, demonstrated their
patriotism and allegiance in defense of their 'country; and
WHEREAS', it.is'fitting and proper that on this centennial of
the arrival of the ship High Flyer the pepple of Hawaii should
honor Hawaii's citizens, of Azorean ancestry.
N r THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it does hereby congratulate Hawaii's men and women of
Azorean ancestry on the 100th Anniversary of their arrival in Hawaii.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
be instructed to remit true copies of this resolution to Hawaii's
Consulate of Portugal, John Henry Felix and the President of the
Big Island Portuguese Cultural Club, Genevieve Arruda.
