RESOLUTION N0. 59 99
NAMING A STREET IN THE COUNTY OF HAWAII, STATE OF HAWAII.
WHEREAS, the Council of the County of Hawaii is authorized to adopt street names for
unnamed roadways in the County of Hawaii pursuant to Section 22-35, Article 2, Chapter 22,
Hawaii County Code; and
WHEREAS, the Director of the State Department of Transportation by letter dated
May 16, 1983, granted permission to the Planning Director to name roads under State
jurisdiction, and
WHEREAS, the State House of Representatives adopted House Resolution No. 353
(1973) honoring the former State Representative from Kohala, Akoni Pule, by renaming the
Kawaihae-Mahukona Highway to Akoni Pule Highway, and
WHEREAS, the County Council by adopting Resolution No. 88 (1973) requested the
Advisory Committee on Geographic Names to name the Kokoiki-Mahukona-Kawaihae Highway
on the Island of Hawaii as the "Akoni Pule Highway," and
WHEREAS, the State Deparhnent of Transportation has been identifying Highway
No. 270, from its intersection with Kawaihae Road to its terminus at the Pololu Valley Lookout
as "Akoni Pule Highway," with the placement of Street Name Signs,
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the County of Hawaii,
names Highway 270 on the Island of Hawaii as "Akoni Pule Highway" in accordance with the
attached map identified as Exhibit A.
