WHEREAS, Emeritus Senior Deacon Edward Kawaikapu Akiona of
Haili Church celebrated his 90th birthday on March 11, 1980; and
WHEREAS, Senior Akiona was born and raised in Keanae, Maui,
graduated from the Kamehameha Schools in 1913, and in July of
that same year arrived in Kilo; and
WHEREAS, he was employed as an electrician at the Hilo
Electric Light Company until his retirement in 1958, and is
probably one of the oldest living retirees of HELCo; and
WHEREAS, in October of 1916

he married Elizabeth Chang of

the Hawaiian culture and, most
WHEREAS, for 50 years this kindly softspoken Sunday School
teacher taught many children and adults at his weekly Sunday School
gatherings about God and also influenced them to be self-righteous,
law-abiding citizens of this community; and
WHEREAS, without depending on his children or a nursing care
home, Papa Akiona nursed his bedridden wife for the last 13 years
of her life, exemplifying his love and kindness in fulfilling the
marriage vow and his expression, "cherish love until thy part."
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that it joins with his children, relatives and friends
in extending congratulations to EMERITUS SENIOR DEACON EDWARD
KAWAIKAPU AKIONA on his 90th birthday celebration and wishing him
continued good health so that he may continue to serve the Almighty.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
send a true copy of this resolution to Edward Kawaikapu Akiona, Sr.,
and to his children Edward K. Akiona, Jr.; Louise Akiona Wela;
Harold Akiona; Louis Akiona; James Akiona; Richard Akiona; Lloyd
Akiona; Leonora Akiona Kaaukai; and Eunice Akiona Seward.
