WHEREAS, in ceremonies to be held at the Ilikai Hotel on
Friday, August 24, 1979, U14G SOY "BEANS" AFOOK will be inducted as
an honoree in the Hawaii Sports Hall of Fame and Museum; and
WHEREAS, this prestigious award and distinctive recognition is
duly deserved, for in his 14 years of coaching basketball,
"BEANS" AFOOK compiled an enviable record in interscholastic
basketball competition never achieved by anyone before nor equalled
since; and
WHEREAS, COACH AFOOK's remarkable record shall be entered in
the annals at 208 games played and 193 won; 13 Territorial champion-
ship tournaments played, 10 championships won; 6 undefeated seasons;
two winning streaks of 45 and.53 games; and in 12 Territorial
tournaments, seven of his players won the Most Valuable Player
Award; and
WHEREAS, although he is known and recognized throughout the
State of Hawaii for his coaching ability, he must also be justly
acknowledged for his exemplary contributions to Hilo High School,
for his notable and dedicated service to his community, and for the
respect and admiration he has gained from the hundreds of students
who benefitted from his other outstanding capabilities as an
educator and remarkable person.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that in testimony of his induction to the Hawaii Sports Hall
of Fame and Museum it extends to UNG SOY "BEANS" AFOOK its congratu-
lations for receiving this notable, worthy and lasting recognition.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the Countv of Hawaii
be instructed to remit true copies of this resolution to
Mr. and Mrs. Ung Soy "Beans" Afook; to the Board of Directors of the
Hawaii Sports Hall of Fame.and Museum; and to Hilo High School.
