RESOLUTION 458
WHEREAS, after. 29 years of service with the County Parks and
Recreation Department, Mr, Jack Matsui retired on July 1, 1979; and
WHEREAS, in wishing to pay tribute to Mr. Matsui for his
devotion, association and contribution to the sport of boxing we
hereby publicly recognize Mr. Matsui for
(1) Starting the biddy and amateur boxing programs at
Hilo Boys' Club in 1954;
(2) Helping form the ilukilau, Paramount and Papaikou CYO
teams;
(3) Assisting in the deve3opment of the Darcy Alameda night,
the Golden Gloves Scholarship Fund and the Richard Chinen Scholar-
ship Fund; and
(4) Was instrumental in the organization of our present-day
Junior Boxing Program; and
(5) Did aid in the coaching and development of outstanding
young men who have represented the Island of. Hawaii through the
P.AU Junior Olympics Program, the National Coaches Association, and
the Big Island Amateur Boxing Association Board of Directors; and
FZiEREAS, during his years of involvement with local boxing he
served as Big Island Golden Gloves representative_, was a member of.
the AAU Junior Olympic Program, the National Coaches Association
and the Big Island Amateur Boxing Association Board of Directors;
and
WHEREAS, during his 25 -year association in working with and
coaching youngsters in the amateur boxing procram there emerged
16 Hawaii State Golden Gloves and AAU champions, Outstanding Boxer
of the Year awards for five straight years, and in 1977 the Bic
Island won its first state championship title; and
WHEREAS, his community service saw his active participation
as Boy Scout Director, Midget Baseball Commissioner, Big Island
CYO Director, Hukilau AC Director, Hawaii Judo Association mer,,ber,
and assisting St. Joseph's School and Hawaii Community College
with their athletic program.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that it extends its deep appreciation to Mr. Jack Matsui
for his selfless contribution to the youth of this County and
wishes him good health during his retirement years.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
be and is hereby directed to transmit a true copy of this resolution
to Mr. Jack. Matsui.
