RESOLUTION NO. 427 <br />N <br />WHEREAS, the 16th Annual Merrie Monarch Festival was held <br />in Hilo, much to the delight of thousands of people including <br />those who were entertained by a variety of programs that were <br />offered, as well as the many participants coming from all over <br />the state; and <br />WHEREAS, this unique week-long festival which honors the <br />memory of the last Hawaiian monarch, namely King David (Kawika) <br />Laamea Kalakaua who during.his reign is given credit for the <br />renaissance of the Hawaiian Culture and arts, including the <br />preservation of artifacts, customs, music and the revitalization <br />of the ancient hula; and . <br />WHEREAS, the highlight --'of the Mertie Monarch Week culminated <br />in the 1979 Miss Aloha Hula, Hula Kahiko (ancient hula) and the <br />Hula Auwana (Modern hula).competition, in which Hawaii's finest <br />hula dancers, performed vying for honors and recognition that <br />comes with winning any of the.highly coveted titles; and <br />WHEREAS, the success of the recent Merrie Monarch Festival <br />has grown by the number of participants as well as the overflow <br />audiences, can be attributed -to many volunteers, but more so <br />through the dedication of Chairwoman Dorothy S. Thompson, who has <br />nurtured the Merrie Monarch Festival into a tremendous success <br />it is today; and I -- I . <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY <br />OF HAWAII that we hereby extend to all the participants and the <br />countless workers coordinated by Chairwoman Dorothy Thompson our <br />heartfelt congratulations for a job well done in the success of <br />the Merrie Monarch Festival and the continuance of the renaissance <br />of the Hawaiian Cultures. <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii <br />is instructed to submit true copies of this resolution to <br />Dorothy S. Thompson, Chairwoman of the Merrie Monarch Festival <br />and Herbert T.
