WHEREAS, the 16th Annual Merrie Monarch Festival was held
in Hilo, much to the delight of thousands of people including
those who were entertained by a variety of programs that were
offered, as well as the many participants coming from all over
the state; and
WHEREAS, this unique week-long festival which honors the
memory of the last Hawaiian monarch, namely King David (Kawika)
Laamea Kalakaua who during.his reign is given credit for the
renaissance of the Hawaiian Culture and arts, including the
preservation of artifacts, customs, music and the revitalization
of the ancient hula; and .
WHEREAS, the highlight --'of the Mertie Monarch Week culminated
in the 1979 Miss Aloha Hula, Hula Kahiko (ancient hula) and the
Hula Auwana (Modern hula).competition, in which Hawaii's finest
hula dancers, performed vying for honors and recognition that
comes with winning any of the.highly coveted titles; and
WHEREAS, the success of the recent Merrie Monarch Festival
has grown by the number of participants as well as the overflow
audiences, can be attributed -to many volunteers, but more so
through the dedication of Chairwoman Dorothy S. Thompson, who has
nurtured the Merrie Monarch Festival into a tremendous success
it is today; and I -- I .
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that we hereby extend to all the participants and the
countless workers coordinated by Chairwoman Dorothy Thompson our
heartfelt congratulations for a job well done in the success of
the Merrie Monarch Festival and the continuance of the renaissance
of the Hawaiian Cultures.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
is instructed to submit true copies of this resolution to
Dorothy S. Thompson, Chairwoman of the Merrie Monarch Festival
and Herbert T. Matayoshi, Mayor of the County of Hawaii.
