l'HEREAS, the 5th Annual Big Island Marathon will be held on
Sunday, July 1, 1979, from 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Hilo, Hawaii,
with 700 runners expected to participate; and
WHEREAS, the first race was called the "SAM BOSETTI MEMORIAL
MARATHON" with 57 competitors, among them the following: who are
presently nationally known runners, Duncan MacDonald, Cindy
Dalrymple, Sue Stricklen; and
WHEREAS, the name of the race was changed to the "BIG ISLAND
MAPATHON" in 1976 and resulted with 144 finishers, thereafter
following the national trend increasing to 278 runners in 1977
and 518 runners in 1978; and
WHEREAS, the Big Island F.oadrunners, a non-profit volunteer
organization, has, as their sole interest, been promoting the
running and jogging on the Big Island; and
WHEREAS, last year 95 percent of the marathon participants
and their companions were people from away, who kept local hotel
rooms occupied in Hilo and indirectly contributing greatly to the
economy of the Big Island; and
WHEREAS, with the annual progressive growth in the number of
marathon participants, the Big Island Marathon may become one of
major sporting events and be listed in the Runner's World Magazine
as one of the top 15 marathon races in the Country.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that it extends sincere gratitude and commendation to
the officers and the members of the Big Island Roadrunner's Club
for their volunteer efforts in promoting the Annual Big Island
Marathon and wish them another successful year.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
be and is hereby directed to transmit true copies of this
resolution to Dr. R. Lee Howard, President of the Big Island
Roadrunner's Club and to two other sponsors, ",loha. Airlines and
the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel.
