WHEREAS, the Hawaii State Chapter, American Red Cross Annual
Volunteer Recognition luncheon was held at the Princess Kaiulani
Hotel on March 6, 1979; and
WHEREAS, Benjamin "Benny" Enriques of Pahoa, Hawaii, was
named the Big Island Volunteer of the Year; and
WHEREAS, "Benny" Enrique-, has distinguished himself in the
American Red Cross in the role of coordinator for the Puna Area
Disaster Relief Services by doing the following:
A. He completed and received the American Red Cross
First Aid Instructor.Certificate and provided training
to first aiders in the Puna Community during the month
of May, 1976;
B. He assisted with the -evacuation of people in Kalapana
to the Pahoa Community Center after a severe earth-
quake which generated high seas during the month of
November, 1976;
C. During the month of September, 1977, he coordinated
the evacuation and care of 40 Kalapana families
during the volcanic eruption;
D. In October of 1978, he set up a shelter at the Pahoa
Community Center for..the Kalapana people in prepara-
tion for evacuation during the watch-phas'e- of
Hurricane Susan which struck the Hawaiian Islands; and
WHEREAS, "Benny" Enriques, a 20 -year veteran, retired
1st -Sergeant, recipient of two Purple Hearts, two Bronze -
Distinguished Medals, two Silver Stars, twice injured in the Viet-
nam War as a combat soldier; and
WHEREAS, "Benny" Enriques has served in many Puna Community
Clubs and Associations as President, Vice -President, Director and
Advisor; and
WHEREAS, "Benny" Enriques now attends Hawaii Community
College, majoring in Agriculture and has an earnest desire to
attain self-sufficiency in.the growing of food crops.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF TFiE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that it extends its congratulations to Benjamin
"Benny" Enriques for being.selected the Big Island Volunteer of
the Year for the Hawaii State American Red Cross.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of
Hawaii transmit true copies of this resolution to Benjamin
"Benny" Enriques, the Hawaii State Chapter and the Big Island
Chapter of the American Red Cross.
