HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 409 Draft 01 1976-1980=� a County of Hawaii—State of Hawaii Resolution No: 409 WHEREAS, a group of Ka'u residents with the cooperation of the University of Hawaii's College of Continuing Education and Community Service (UHH-CCECS) created a community learning center during the year of 1973 at C. Brewer's vacant Honuapo Sugar Mill (Hutchinson Mill); and WHEREAS, "The Mill" now serves as a base for programs ranging from traditional Hawaiian arts and crafts to those of the modern media and provides numerous other services to the community; and WHEREAS, its activities include instruction in woodcarving and lauhala weaving, a print shop, credit courses by UHH-CCECS, language classes, a chorus, a summer youth recreation program and a gift shop; and WHEREAS, among the groups participating in the activities of "The Mill" are the University of Hawaii's College of Continuing Education and Community Service, the State Comprehensive Employment and Training agency (SCET), the Hawaii County Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO), the Hawaiian Civic Club and Alu-Like as well as numerous individuals who volunteer their time; and WHEREAS, a nonprofit corporation called Home Na'auao O Ka'u has now been formed to assume responsibility for the programs of "The Mill" and to aid the staff in acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary to develop rural self-sufficiency and community pride, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that "The Mill" is a needed asset to the Ka'u community and commends the individuals and organizations which had the foresight to initiate the project and to carry it on so successfully. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii transmit true conies to Larry Nakano of the Office of Aging; Betty Snowden and Faith Talakai of Alu Like; Zachary DeBernardi, Pele Hanoa, Dennis Kana'e Keawe and Kalani Meinecke of the Ka'u Hawaiian Civic Club; Anna Cariaga and Mary Evangelista of OEO; Mary Matayoshi and Dwayne Yoshina of UHH-CCECSj and to Jeremiah Cahill, VISTA volunteer.
