Resolution
WHEREAS, there is an ongoing organized movement called the
Holua Project interested in the restoration of the HOLUAS,which
are rocky sled runways, used by the ancient Hawaiian Ali'i to
race on, using narrow sleds carved from native wood; and
WHEREAS, this sport of the Ali'i was both exciting and daring
as the competitors would run with their sleds to gain momentum,
then lop on these sleds and shoot head first at the top of the
HOLUA with the object of sliding farther than any of the other
participants; and
WHEREAS, most of the HOLUAS were 300 to 500 feet long, the
Kaneaka Holua also known as the "royal slide at Keauhou" is a
mile in length ending at the shore of Heeia Bay and is listed
on the National Register of Historic Places and that the bottom
half of Kaneaka has been destroyed by the construction of a
golf course.
WHEREAS, the restoration, reconstruction and preservation
of the more significant HOLUA, are worthy undertakings in the
interest of sustaining the lore of the Hawaiian Heritage.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that it recognizes the cultural benefits that will
accrue to our people if these restoration efforts are successful
and thereby commend the dedicated volunteers presently involved
in this project.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of
Hawaii remit true copies of this resolution to members of the
Board of Directors of Holua Project namely, Richard Fowler;
David Isbell; Virginia Isbell; Dennis Keawe; Jim Nottage;
John O'Leary; Lily Pa; Harry Ruddle, Jr.; Reverend Leon Sterling;
Rick Torres; E. C. H. Van Gieson; George Van Gieson; and Consultant
Hugo Coutandin.
