Resolution
WHEREAS, on March 17, 1979, the Honokaa Community dedicated
a newly renovated 100 year old building, making a new home for
the Honokaa Community Federal Credit Union; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Helen Cole, President of the Historic Hawaii
Foundation, Hawaii member of the Board of Advisors of the
National Trust for Historic Preservation, Director of Preservation
Action (Washington, D. C.), former school teacher at Honokaa was
the keynote speaker; and
WHEREAS, architect George Heneghan in his design plans for
this historic edifice retained the traditional century old exterior
motif and adapted the interior for functional use; and
WHEREAS, honored at the ceremony were Steve Mochida, Sr.,
Yoshio Fujimoto, Toshio Nakashima, William Awong, Takeshi Ujiki,
Henry Morita and Feliciano Torres, the seven original charter
members; and
WHEREAS, from seven members in 1955, the Honokaa Community
Federal Credit Union has grown to 2,900 members with a total
savings of over $4 million making it one of the most prosperous
credit unions on the Big Island.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that it congratulates the officers and members of the
Honokaa Community Federal Credit Union for the successful completion
of their 10 -year plan to preserve the historical building for
posterity and hopes that this will give impetus to other organiza-
tions and individuals to follow suit.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
be and is hereby directed to transmit a true copy of this
resolution to Katherine Mendes, Manager of the Honokaa Community
Federal Credit Union; Mrs. Helen Cole; and Mr. George Heneghan.
