WHEREAS, Hawaii was admitted into the Union in 1959 as the
50th State of the United States of America and has since clearly
established herself as an island -state filled with a Polynesian
cultural heritage unique from the rest- of the Union; and
WHEREAS, with the recognition of Statehood, the people of Hawaii
have enjoyed a tremendous growth in population, economic development
and expanded opportunities; and
WHEREAS, in observance of the "Aloha State's" 20th anniversary
of statehood, the Democrats of West Hawaii, representing the Hawaii
County Democratic Party, will celebrate this milestone occasion with
a gala three-day Hawaiian extravaganza from August 17-19 in
Kailua-Kona, the original site of King Kamehamehals Hawaiian
Kingdom; and
WHEREAS, dignitaries, regardless of political party affiliation,
from the county, state and national levels, are expected to parti-
cipate in celebration of Hawaii's 20th birthday.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it designates August 17, 18, and 19, 1979 as Hawaii
County Twentieth Statehood Anniversary weekend.
BE IT FURTHER EE•SOLVEP that citizens throughout Hawaii be
encouraged to support and participate in this commemoration.
Governor of the State of Hawaii; the Honorable Herbert T. Matayoshi,
Mayor of the County of Hawaii; and Ms. Ruth Tabrah, Chairperson,
Hawaii County Committee, Democratic Party of Hawaii; and to the
Democrats of West Hawaii.
