Resolution No. 389
WHEREAS, that the University of Hawaii at Hilo (UHH) is a
nonpolluting industry which contributes millions of dollars a year
to the Big Island economy; and
WHEREAS, UHHC offers a four-year curriculum which is a viable
alternative to UH-Manoa and allows Big Island students to remain on
the Big Island and still receive quality education; and
WHEREAS, it serves as one of the leaders in the field of culture
and the arts in the Hilo community; and
WHEREAS, through its College of Continuing Education, residents
from all over the Big Island have been exposed to various fields
of higher learning which otherwise would have been unavailable to
them; and
WHEREAS, through its excellent_athietic program, specifically
Vulcan basketball and women's volleyball, recognition and honor have
been brought not only to UHH but to the entire Big Island as well.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that this County urges the Legislators to appropriate
necessary funds during this present legislature to provide viable
schools of higher learning so that the University of Hawaii at Hilo
may continue to grow and excel as an institute of higher learning
on the Big Island.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit true copies of this resolution to Governor George Ariyoshi;
the Board of Regents; Representative Charles Ushijima, Chairman
i
of the House Higher Education Committee; Senator Neil Abercrombie,
Chairman of the Senate Higher Education Committee; Representative
Jack Suwa, Chairman of the House Finance Committee;
Senator Benjamin J. Cayetano, Chairman of Senate Ways and Means
Committee; and to President Duncan Galland of ASUH-HC.
