WHEREAS, the Big Island was recently drenched with a record
breaking rainstorm, which brought havoc, devastation and misery
to many of our communities; and
V,7HEREAS, inspite of the seriousness of the crisis there was
never any panic amongst our people, fact which enhanced the
preventative, rescue, and the eventual clean-up efforts, which
in turn resulted in keeping the monetary losses smaller than it
could have been and, more importantly, prevented the loss of
human life; and
WHEREAS, the success in curbing the disaster from being
more damaging was due to a great degree to the professional job
done by our Police, Fire, and Public Works Departments and more
especially the Civil Defense Agency; and
WHEREAS, such a team achievement is reassuring to the general
public that in the face of an unexpected natural disaster, the
County agencies can and will respond in the best interest, health
and welfare of our residents,
NOW, TIiEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COU14TY
OF HAWAII that in recognition of these untiring and dedicated
efforts of these public servants and the countless unnamed
volunteers, the County Council hereby extends its gratitude and
commendation for a job well done.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that true copies of this resolution
be remitted to Mr. harry Kim, Administrator of the Civil Defense
Agency; Mr. Edward iiarada, Chief Engineer, Department of Public
Works; Mr. Donald Thompson, Chief of the Hawaii Fire Department;
and Mr. Guy Paul, Chief of the Hawaii Police Department.
