WHEREAS, the University of Hawaii at Hilo women's volleyball
team attained a prestigious peak in athletic competition by winning
the championship of Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for
Women (AIAW), Western Regional Tournament', which was held at the
UC Davis Campus in California on November 24-25, 1978; and
WHEREAS, with this coveted championship, recognition, prestige
and honor was brought to our island as well as our state; and
WHEREAS, this sporting feat was accomplished by an excellent
coaching and team effort as the Vulcan Women played ten tough "road"
games in a span of ten days and eventually compiled an outstanding
seasonal record.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII, that in recognition of this esteemed achievement, it hereby
extends to the University of Hawaii at Hilo Vulcan Women Volleyball
team congratulations for a deserving victory and also wishes it good
luck in their up -coming participation in the AIAW Natinnal
Championship to be held in Orlando, Florida.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
is instructed to remit true copies of this resolution to co -captains
Cheryl Ching and Lyndell Lindsey of the University of Hawaii at Hilo
Womens Volleyball team, Coach Sharon Peterson, Mr. Ramon Goya,
Athletic Director, University of Hawaii President, Dr. Fujio Matsuda,
and University of Hawaii at Hilo Acting Chancellor, Mr. Peter Dobson.
