HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 337 Draft 01 1976-1980i RESOLUTION NO. 337 � WHEREAS, a fitting tribute to a gracious lady will beheld on ; November 19, 1978, to honor IOLANI LUAHINE at "Auntie Io's;�Night to Remember"; and WHEREAS, under the sponsorship of the Association for Hawaiian Music, a dance halau will be created that will bear her name'and',:be the..active repository of her knowledge of Hawaii's ancient dances and chants for future generations; and WHEREAS, this gifted woman so dearly loved and respected as the greatest Hawaiian dancer of our time returned to her home at Napoopoo to share her mana'o with kamaaina and malihini alike; and WHEREAS, such recognition has been lauded IOLANI LUAHINE in that she was the first to receive the State of Hawaii Order of Distinction for Cultural Leadership, she has also been the recipient of invitations to Washington for the National Folk Festival dedicated to the conservation of national culture, and that her name has been recorded in the National Registry as a Living Treasure of Hawaii; and WHEREAS, several years ago during the Merrie Monarch Festival dedi- cated to Aunty Io, she captured the hearts of Hiloans when she danced the entire route of the parade in her bare feet. NOW, -THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it extends to IOLANI LUAHINE its warmest mahalo and aloha for sharing and giving to the people of the County. of Hawaii, herself, her special gift and her love. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk transmit this Resolu- tion to Iolani Luahine on behalf of the Council of the County of Hawaii. Dated at Hilo, Hawaii, this 15th day of November, 1978.
