HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 326 Draft 01 1976-1980RESOLUTION NO. 326 C WHEREAS, some 3,000 people are directly employed by the Big Island of Hawaii's sugar industry, an enterprise that involves some 450 independent growers in addition to large corporate bodies; and WHEREAS, another 6,000 individuals in our community are involved in providing essential services to the Big Island's sugar producers and are thereby dependent on the industry; and WHEREAS, the survival of the sugar industry on the Big Island is thus of critical importance to the entire economy of the County of Hawaii; and WHEREAS, the defeat of the Sugar Stabilization Act of 1978 dealt a stunning blow to the domestic sugar industry, further threatening the very existence of Hawaii's sugar industry; and WHEREAS, our community cannot afford the demise of this major Hawaiian economic partner; and WHEREAS, it has been announced that President Jimmy Carter will exercise the executive powers of the President of the United States to provide stability for domestic sugar prices and assure our industry of its continued survival; and WHEREAS, his exercise of these Presidential powers can be expected to effect the market price objective of 15 cents per pound and thereby restore stability to the United States' domestic sugar industry, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it go on record as unanimously expressing its gratitude to President Jimmy Carter for the announcement of his intention to take the executive action necessary to achieve a domestic market price of at least 15 cents for the 1978 crop year and further, to commend him on his plans to seek legislation establishing a reasonable domestic sugar program in the next session of the U.S. Congress. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii be and is hereby directed to transmit a true copy of this Resolution to JIMMY CARTER, President of the United States, The White House, Washington, D.
