HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 312 Draft 01 1976-1980County of Hawaii --State of Hawaii Resolution WHEREAS, the demonstration at the Hilo Airport by 53 people on September 4, 1978, was generally a peaceful one void of any injury to anyone or major adverse incident; and WHEREAS, these demonstrators both young and old believed that this method was the only effective way to attract atten- tion to the problems that they felt were discriminatory .to the Hawaiian people; and WHEREAS, the potential punishment to these people are fines of $1,000 and one year in jail for each of them for their alleged violation; and WHEREAS, such a penalty appears to be too harsh in light of more serious demonstrations or strikes by governmental and other untions which have in the past closed down our seaports and stopped or stalled public safety services such as police and fire protection without penalty, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it requests that the Court in its judicial wisdom look upon this case as an expression by a group of people to exercise their cherished freedom to congregate and state their views, and thereby dismiss the entire case. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii remit true copies of this resolution to Judge Paul M. de Silva of the South Hilo District Court and to Governor George Ariyoshi. 1978.
