WHEREAS, members of the Imiola Congregational Church, the
Big Island Congregational Churches and the United Church of Christ
gathered on July 11 and 18 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of
the arrival in Waimea of Reverend Lorenzo, affectionately known
as Makua Laiana; and
WHEREAS, in paying tribute to Makua Laiana, one remembers
that he walked many miles in northern Kohala, Kawaihae, Puako,
Hamakua and Waimea, climbed steep cliffs and traveled by canoe to
Waipio and Waimanu in order to preach and minister to the 15,000
souls living in villages scattered throughout the area; and
WHEREAS, during Reverend Lyons 54 years of dedicated missionary
service, he was also called upon to act as a principal, school
superintendent, postmaster, carpenter, gardener; and
WHEREAS, Makua Laiana composed many Hawaiian Hymns, translated
and prepared the Hawaiian hymnal, "Ka Buke Himeni Hawaii", and
wrote the beloved hymn, "Hawaii Aloha", a poem of his own writing;
and
WHEREAS, this anniversary recalls that the first church in
Waimea, a grass thatched building with one window, a wooden pulpit
and two four -legged stools, was formally dedicated in 1830 by
King Kamehameha III; and
WHEREAS, over the years, numerous changes to the interior and
exterior of the church occurred until 1855 when the cornerstone
was laid for the new church and named by Reverend Lyons,
"Imiola" meaning "Seeking Life"; and
WHEREAS, the Imiola Congregational Church stands today as a
fitting monument and reminder of Reverend Lyons' devotion and deep
love for the Hawaii people and of the pride and continued
determination by the congregation to preserve its rich heritage
and history.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it extends its congratulations to the officers and
members of the Imiola Congregational Church for successfully
conducting a memorable 150th anniversary celebration and expresses
its Mau Ke Aloha No Imiola -- Everlasting Love for Imiola.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
be directed to remit a true copy of this resolution to
Kahu Claude Moorfield and Elizabeth Kimura, Chairperson of the
150th Anniversary Committee for the Imiola Congregational Church.
