Resolution No.4' 16 82
WHEREAS, Hawaii Island is the traditional home of. Hawaii's
legendary fire goddess Pele, her sister Hi'iaka, and their friend
Hopoe, around whom so much Hula lore revolves; and
WHEREAS, native Hawaiian Plants of Legendary and ceremonial
significance to the Hula abound in the forests of Hawaii Island,
more extensively than on any other island, and
WHEREAS, the first Hula ever danced is said to have been
danced at Nanahuki, Keaau, on Hawaii Island; and
WHEREAS, Hawaii Island has been home to two of Hawaii's great
Hula masters, the late Edith Kanakaole of Hilo and the late
Iolani Luahine of Kona:
WHEREAS, Hawaii Island is the birthplace of the Merrie Monarch
Hula Festival, founded by native son George Naope in 1963, and
credited with much of the impetus for the modern renaissance of
the Hula; and
WHEREAS, Hawaii Island halau (hula schools) have represented.
the Hula through numerous national and international performances,
and have won many honors; and
WHEREAS, thousands of Poe Hula (hula people) visit the Big
Island each year to participate in the Merrie Monarch Festival,
and to visit sites, such as Kilauea, of traditional significance
to the Hula; and
WHEREAS, Hawaii Island and the drama of its unique natural
,_.environment continue to inspire the composition of new chant and
dance in the tradition of the Hula;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that Hawaii Island be designated the "Hula Capital of
the World."
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that true copies of this resolution be
sent to the Honorable George R. Ariyoshi, Governor, State of Hawaii;
The Honorable Mayor Herbert T. Matayoshi, Mayor of the County of
Hawaii; The Honorable Eileen Anderson, Mayor of the City and County
of Honolulu; The Honorable Rudy Pacarro, Council Chairman, City and
County of Honolulu; The Honorable Eduardo Malapit, Mayor of the
County of Kauai; the Honorable Jeremy Harris, Council Chairman,
County of Kauai; the Honorable Hannibal Tavares, Mayor of the County
of Maui; and to the Honorable Robert Nakasone, Council Chairman,
County of Maui.
