RESOLUTION NO. 324 82
WHEREAS, Dr. George D. Durham, Jr., will be honored with a
testimonial dinner hosted by the Big Island Press Club (BIPC) on
Friday, April 21 1982; and
WHEREAS, the honors to be bestowed is in recognition of
Dr. Durham's invaluable participation in the BIPC's annual Imu
presentations in which he has served as the show's musical director
and band leader for 13 consecutive and highly successful years; and
WHEREAS, for his musical contributions to the IMU, George Durham
was deservingly accorded an esteemed honorary membership status to
the BIPC in 1971 and has also left his mark "in other musical.arenas
having served as the director of the Hilo High School Band for the
period 1965 - 1971; since 1971 to the present time is a Professor
of Music at the University of Hawaii - Hilo College and is the
founder and leader of the Vulcan Band; and
WHEREAS, his musical achievements here were preceded by an
equally impressive 22 -year military career in the Marine Corps
where as Chief Warrant Officer he,directed-bands located on the
U. S. Mainland,,Japan and Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, besides Dr. Durham's reputation in the musical field,
he has also excelled as a scholar having been the recipient of two .:
awards for.outstanding teaching; namely, the Experienced Teachers
Fellowship to George Peabody College (1968-1969) and the National
Endowment for Humanities, Summer Seminar for College Teachers, at.
University of Michigan (1979)'F
NOW, THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that it extends congratulations to Dr. D;rham on the
advent of the testimonial dinner in recognition of his musical
expertise and,unselfishly giving of his time and talent to the
community.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii'
is instructed to remit true copies of this resolution to
Dr. George D. Durham, Jr.; Dr. Stephen Mitchell, Chancellor of the
University of Hawaii, Hilo College; and Mrs. Librada Luis, President
of the Big Island Media Council.
