Resolution
WHEREAS, the Legal Aid Society, who provided vital legal .
services to an estimated 3,233 poverty -level persons throughout the
state during the past year, has been informed that their federal
allotment will be reduced by $184,617; and
WHEREAS, Act 1 of the First Special Session, 1981, appropriated
$907,300 in the fiscal year 1981-82 for the Legal Aid Society; and
WHEREAS, H. B. 2070-82 H. D. 1, Relating to Appropriations for
the Fiscal Biennium July 1, 1981 to June 30, 1983, has incorporated
an appropriation of $900,000 for the Society; and
WHEREAS, the Senate Ways and Means Committee has recommended
that the $900,000 be reduced to $450,000, such a reduction would
seriously cripple the operations and effectiveness of the Society.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it finds the services of the Legal Aid Society to be
essential for the destitute populace.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council appeals to the Hawaii
State Legislature to continue the funding of this agency at an
effective level.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit copies of this Resolution to the Honorable Richard Wong,
Senate President; the Honorable Henry Peters, Speaker of the House;
the Honorable Mamoru Yamasaki, Chairman of the Senate Ways and
Means; the Honorable Tony Kunimura, Chairman of the House Finance,
Hawaii Members of the State Legislature and Ms. Allene Richardson,
Executive Director of the Legal Aid Society.
