6:H"a%EAS, the 19th .Annual Merrie "4onarch Festival held in :filo
during the week of April 11-17, 1982, was truly a festive and
memorable event for residents and visitors alike; and
WHEREAS, the Festival, held in honor of Hawaii's Royal Merrie
Monarch, sing David La'amea Kalakaua, featured a variety of events and
activities which perpetuated the best in Hawaiian music, dance and
culture; and
WHEREAS, among, the highlights, of this year's 'Herrie Monarch
Festival was the traditional statewide hula competitions featuring the
very best of Hawaii's hula halau(s); and
WHEREAS, for the Island of Hawaii, it was a sweet and long overdue
victory as (silo's own Johnny Lum Ho's Halau 0 Ka Ua rani Lehua
captured top honors in the three days of hula competitions; and
WHEREAS, the overwhelming success of the 19th Annual Berrie
Monarch Festival is a tribute to those dedicated Big Islanders who
contributed countless hours of their time to plan, develop and carry
out the week long event.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII ta.ces great pleasure in commending Dorothy "Dot" Thompson and
the members of her Merrie t4ona.rch Committee for their part in helping
to preserve and perfect our unique and beautiful Hawaiian heritage.
BE IT Fuxram RESOLVED that recognition be also given to special
people like Festival Assistant Muriel Nuuanu who used a week of her
precious vacation time from worm at the County Clerk's Office to help
make this year's event the best ever.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that true copies of this Resolution be
presented to Ms. Dorothy "Dot" Thompson, Chairman of the Berrie
Monarch .Festival, and to her Assistant, sirs. Muriel Nuuanu.
