HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 346 Draft 01 1980-19840 RESOLUTION No. 346 82 WHEREAS, the Merrie Monarch Festival held annually in Hilo in honor of Hawaii's Royal F•lerrie Monarch, King David La'amea Kalakaua is also the appropriate setting for the biggest and most prestigious Statewide Hula Competition; and vHIEREAS, the 19th Annual Merrie Monarch.Festivl held last week featured the very best in ancient and modern hula; and WHEREAS, for the first time in the twelve years of the Festival hula competitions, a Bid; Island group, Johnny Lum Ho's Halau 0 Ka Ua Kani Lehua, swept top honors for the 1982 overall title; and WHEREAS, on his way to capturing the title, Lum Ho'a Kanani Oda won the Miss Aloha Hula competition, his men took top honors in every category of the men's competitions and his women tied for second in the hula Kahiko (ancient hula) and placed third in the hula Auwana (modern hula) competitions for a. very close finish over excellent ,groups from the neighbor islands. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL Or THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it takes this means to congratulate Kumu Hula Johnny Lum Ho and his Halau 0 Ka Us Kani Lehua for their impressive victory in winning the overall title at the 19th Annual Merrie Monarch Festival hula Competitions. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Council expresses its pleasure and pride in having one of our very own hula halau(s) be recognized as Hawaii's best. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that true copies of this Resolution be presented to Kumu Hula Johnny Lum Ho and Festival Chairman, Ms. Dorothy "Dot" Thompson.
