O RESOLUTION NO. 357 82 WHEREAS, the PIOPIO BEARS ATHLETIC CLUB is celebrating its 40th anniversary on April 24 at the Elks' Club; and WHEREAS, the Piopio Bears from its inception served the youngsters from this so-called disadvantaged Piopio Street district, and is considered one of the oldest athletically - oriented youth clubs in the Hilo area; and WHEREAS, many of the present leaders were once greatly involved as participants and players, raising necessary funds to carry out the numerous programs, thereby perpetuating the very life of the organization; and WHEREAS, the main purpose then and now is to give as many youngsters as possible a chance to take part in wholesome athletics, to develop leadership and to become good citizens in the community; and WHEREAS, the Piopio Bears Club was instrumental in having the County Council rename a road from Pauahi Street to the Wailoa Visitor Center, Pi'opi'o Street, a street which was demolished during the 1960 tsunami, thus leaving a legacy of the club's surname. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it extends its congratulations to the PIOPIO BEARS ATHLETIC CLUB on the occasion of their 40th anniversary celebration and wishes the participants in the Club much success in their future undertaking towards serving the youths in this community. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii be instructed to remit a true copy of this Resolution to Ray Fornoff, President of the PIOPIO BEARS ATHLETIC CLUB.
