County of Hawaii - State of Hawaii
Resolution
WHEREAS, the Federal budget for FY 1982-83, proposes huge
reductions in the Medicare, Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income,
Older Americans Act, Housing, Food Stamps and Legal Services
programs; and
WHEREAS, such cutbacks would adversely affect the health and
well-being of many of our people on the Big Island, and more
seriously, the senior citizens; and
WHEREAS, in an effort to campaign against these drastic
proposals, the Hawaii County Office of Aging will be
(1) Conducting informational meetings at Senior Citizen
Centers around the island to make them aware of
pending Federal legislation which affects their benefits
and asking them to pass it on to their members;
(2) Encouraging a letter writing campaign of all affected
families and individuals to express their feelings to
The President and the U. S. Congress; and
(3) Initiating a petition drive to secure at least 10,000
signatures to ask The President to reconsider his
reductions.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that it supports the Hawaii County Office of Aging in
their efforts to sustain at an effective level these humanitarian
programs and asks that all involved people, their friends and
their relatives cooperate in the strategies cited above to make
this campaign a successful one to retain the dignity of our senior
citizens.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
remit true copies of this resolution to President Ronald Reagan,
to U. S. Senators Daniel K. Inouye and Spark M. Matsunaga; to
U. S. Representatives Daniel Akaka and Cecil Heftel; and to
William Takaba, Director of the Hawaii County Office of Aging.
