WHEREAS, on May 10, 1982, Senator John Ushijima announced that
after nearly 24 years of service, he was retiring from the State Senate,
leaving his illustrious political career "with a sense of accomplishment";
and
WHEREAS, John Ushijima first entered elected politics as a candidate
for the State Senate in the Statehood elections of 1959, and won that
election and every subsequent State Senate election over the course of
the next two decades; and
WHEREAS, during his years in the State Senate, John Ushijima served
as Chairman or Vice Chairman of every major Senate Committee, including
the powerful Senate Judiciary Committee which he chaired from 1966 to
1974; and
WHEREAS, in 1975, he was chosen by his colleagues to serve as
President of the Senate; and
WHEREAS, as one of the most powerful and respected figures in the
State Legislature, John used his considerable influence to assist the
County of Hawaii in its efforts to construct the infrastructure necessary
to support a strong and healthy island economy by helping to secure
millions of dollars in aid for the County of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, although it is difficult to express in words the full
measure of this body's appreciation for John's many years of dedication
to the people of- the County and State of Hawaii, the Council nevertheless
wishes to convey its heartf It gratitude.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it does hereby extend to Senator John T. Ushijima its
deepest thanks and appreciation for his outstanding contributions to the
County and State of Hawaii and wishes him success in the fulfillment of
all his future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit a true copy of this resolution to The Honorable John T.
Ushijima, State Senator.
