WHEREAS, the Congress of the United States passed a joint
resolution designating the week of March 7 to 13 Women's History
Week in honor of the women of the United States; and
WHEREAS, in sponsoring the resolution, our U. S. Senator
Spark M. Matsunaga declared that the women in the United States have
contributed greatly in building the nation by:
1. Playing and continuing to play a critical economic, cultural,
social role in every sphere of our Nation's Life;
2. Providing the majority of the Nation's volunteers for charitable,
philanthropic, and cultural institutions in the country;
3. Being leaders in the forefront of every major progressive social
change; and
WHEREAS, in the 50th State of the Union, Hawaii Women History
Week will honor its women with an observance titled "IMAGES OF
HERSTORY, A FOUNDATION TO BUILD ON", headed by the Honorable Jean King,
Lieutenant Governor of Hawaii, who is general chairperson for this
occasion; and
WHEREAS, on the Big Island, the women will be honored with a
Ho'olaule'a on March 13 at the Hilo National Guard Armory at General
Lyman Field, co-sponsored by the Committee on Status of Women and
NOW, Hawaiian Island Chapter, featuring an ethnic pageant, entertainment
by women, craftswomen and women in business.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it recognizes the "important contributions made by the women
on the Big Island and joins with the rest of the States in the Nation
in the very deserving observance of the first WOMEN'S HISTORY WEEK
beginning March 7, 1982.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
is instructed to transmit true copies of this resolution to
Lieutenant Governor Jean King, Chairperson of the "IMAGES OF HERSTORY,
A FOUNDATION TO BUILD ON"; Jennie Wung, Chairperson of the Committee
on Status of Women; and to Cyndy Reagan, Chairperson of the Big
Island Chapter of National Organization of Women.
