Resolution
WHEREAS, Amfac, Incorporated's phase-out of Puna Sugar Company
will result in the loss of employment of approximately 500 Puna
residents and the removal from production of over 13,000 acres of
fertile agricultural land; and
WHEREAS, viable alternatives to those involved in this
traumatic transition are of concern to officials of the private
and public sector alike; and
WHEREAS, Senator Matsunaga has announced that an investigation
conducted by Hawaii Natural Energy Institute and Pacific
Resources, Inc. has determined that eucalyptus tree farming in the
Puna area has considerable economic merit for electric power
production at approximately half the production costs for that of
oil; and
WHEREAS, the U. S. Department of Agriculture has obtained $10
million in this year's budget for research into biomass fuels and
Senator Matsunaga is attempting to channel some of these funds to
the Puna area as a viable alternative industry.
NOW, THERFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that they wholeheartedly support Senator Matsunaga in his
efforts to locate a viable alternative to those employees who will
be displaced.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
be directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the Honorable
Spark M. Matsunaga, U. S. Senator.
