Matsunaga has long advocated that maintaining favorable trade relations with foreign countries should be one of our major priorities; and WHEREAS, the Senator is a member of the Senate Finance Committee which has legislative jurisdiction over matters relating to trade, and has been involved in trade negotiations with Japan and other Pacific Basin nations; and WHEREAS, Hawaii, the Senator's home, is geographically located in a position to enhance trade relations with Japan who is the United States' number one trading partner; and WHEREAS, The Senator has recently been reappointed to the post of Alternate Official Advisor to the U. S. Delegation to International Conferences, Meetings and Negotiated Sessions Relating to Trade Agreements. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that the Honorable Senator Spark M. Matsunaga be congratulated for this reappointment and commended for his efforts in furthering U. S. trade in the Pacific Basin region. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii be instructed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the Honorable Spark M. Matsunaga, U. S. Senator.
