WHEREAS, on Sunday, January 24, 1982, the 1981 National Football
Lea;ue capped its successful year with the showcasing of its Super
Bowl XVI game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Cincinnati Bengals
held at the Silverdome in Pontiac, 3ichigan; and
WHEREAS, these two "Cinderella" teams provided over 80,000 attendees,
millions of TV viewers and all sporting enthusiasts an exciting and
drama -packed professional football game to the delight and enjoyment of
football aficionados all over the world; and
WHEREAS, after more than two hours of physical and hard -nose action,
interspersed with spectacular individual as well as team play, the San
Francisco 49ers merged as the champions of Super Bowl XVI by the close
score of 25 to 21; and
WHEREAS, this pinnacle of football competition was attained by a
well -disciplined, well -coached, and dedicated team of men, led by
quarterback Joe Montana whose accurate passing arae and generalship guided
the team throughout the game as he did in the regular season, culminating
in his deserved selection as the Most Valuable Player for Super Bowl XVI;
and
WHEREAS, for Hawaii football fans, the game had another emotional
dimension which made it more meaningful in that Catherine "Cass" Montana,
wife of Joe Montana, has her roots in Hawaii being the daughter of Edwin
and Bonnie Castillo, residents of Honokaa.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII
that it extends to the San Francisco 49ers, Super Bowl XVI champions, and
to the game's Most Valuable Player, Joe Montana, congratulations for
their successes and thanks them for making the 1981 professional football
season a most exciting, and enjoyable recreational pastime.
BE IT FURTHZa RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii is
instructed to remit true copies of this resolution to Eddie
DeBartolo, Jr., Owner; gill Walsh, Coach; Joe Montana, Most Valuable
Player.; and Edwin and 'Bonnie Castillo.
