WHEREAS, the American Hawaii Cruises with its ship the
SS Oceanic Independence has on its schedule a weekly 7 -day cruise
of our islands' five most popular ports -of -call on four different
islands; and
WHEREAS, for those visitations to Hilo beginning in October
1981, the shipboard guests were treated and welcomed on a rotating
basis by hula troups under the auspices of the Hula Halau Program
sponsored and financed by the Fuji Photo Film Hawaii, Inc.; and
WHEREAS, the Hilo dockside greeting program which was
rejuvenated on a demonstration and trial basis was in effect for
thirteen consecutive weeks and brought each week approximately
1,000 visitors and crew members to the ports of Hilo and Kona,
providing a needed and welcomed boost to our island's economy; and
WHEREAS, the Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce has now
consented to be responsible for the continuation of the dockside
receptions for another three months and has already secured
financial assistance from !•7. F1. Shipman, Ltd., Yamada and
Sons, Inc., and ;Mauna Loa Macadamia Out Operation, and encourages
other local businesses to also volunteer their needed commitment.
HOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it commends the Fuji Photo Film Hawaii, Inc., for their
initiative in reviving the dockside greeting program and thank the
Hawaii Island Chamber. of Commerce for their confidence and
foresight In sustaining the program. '
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
be directed to remit true copies of this Resolution to Mfr. Donald
Yamada, President of the Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce;
Mr. Glenn Hara, Local Representative of the Fuji Photo Film
Hawaii, Inc.; Mr. Eloy Blackshear, President of W. H. Shipman, Ltd.;
Mrs. Emma Yamada, President of Yamada & Sons, Inc.; Mr. Paul
Bennett, President of Nauna Loa Macadamia Nut Corporation; and
Mrs. Dorothy Thompson, Co-ordinator'of the Hula Halau Program.
