their second major national championship in 1981 by capturing the AIAW
Division II National Volleyball Championship in Colorado Springs, Colorado on
December 5, 1981; and
WHEREAS, this snorting achievement was attained after only two weeks when
these amazing Vulcans had won the National Association for Intercollegiate
Athletics (NAIA) Women's Volleyball Championship in Athens, West Virginia; and
WHEREAS, the Vulcan wahines despite nagging injuries and illness of some
team members, a demanding tournament schedule and the intense competition,
these super athletes showed their championship character by rising from the
loser's bracket and convincingly beat the tournament's.favorite in a sudden
death play off game; and
WHEREAS, to further attest to their talents, the Vulcans dominated the
individual tournament awards as reflected by Edie Manzano who was named the
Most Valuable Player and winner of the prestigious Broderick Award, and also
selected on the all-star first team along with teammates Co -captain Carla
Carpenter and Cindy Whitworth; with Alofa Tagataese accorded with second team
honors; and
WHEREAS, this rare double championship in national collegiate competition
is indicative of the skill, dedication and courage of the entire Vulcan
players and coaches who have put the University of Hawaii -Hilo in the
limelight of women's collegiate volleyball,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that
it is with great pride that it extends congratulations to the University of
Hawaii -Hilo Women's Volleyball Team and Coaches for being the best NAIA and
AIAW Women's Volleyball Team in the nation for 1981 and for giving volleyball
aficionados exciting and entertaining games with a touch of Hawaiian magic.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii be
instructed to transmit true copies of this resolution to our deserving winners
including the Broderick. Award MVP Edie Manzano; All -Stars, Carla Carpenter,
Cindy Whitworth, Alofa Tagataese; team members Charlene Kahuanui, Shirley
Ah Tou, Joy Downey, Kathy Hong, Pauahi Ioani, Marve Keama, Peka Malae, Sheryl
Scott, Nalani Spencer; Head Coach Sharon Peterson, Assistant Coach Richard
Tiogangco; Ahtletic Director Joey Estrella, Chancellor Stephen Mitchell, and
President Fujio Matsuda.
