HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 272 Draft 01 1980-19840 G County of Hawaii - State of Hawaii Resolution WHEREAS, in an address before the Second International Aquaculture Nutrition Conference at the Unversity of Delaware in Rehoboth on October 28, 1981, Senator Spark M. Matsunaga proposed that part of the $2 billion national school lunch program include fish, which is an aquaculture product having high protein, and thus improve the health of children and ultimately the strengthening of the budding aquaculture industry; and WHEREAS, after an 18 -month study, the First National Aquaculture Development Plan mandated by the Agricultural Policy Act of 1980, a piece of legislation co-sponsored by Senator Matsunaga, has revealed the potential of producing nutritious -high protein fish with less cost as compared to animal protein presently being consumed by the people; and WHEREAS, Senator Spark M. Matsunaga announced that he will introduce an amendment to the agriculture -oriented "Food for Peace" Act calling for support of aquaculture research and technical training for developing nations; and WHEREAS, Senator Matsunaga cites that the State of Hawaii',s achievement in the research and technology aspects within our aquaculture industry is recognized and will be able to make contributions in the development of this budding industry. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it supports amending the "Food for Peace" Act calling for aquaculture research and technical training for developing nations to become self-reliant, also making aquaculture products such as fish a part of the school lunch program and commends Senator Spark M. Matsunaga for his concern for our children and especially those children of the developing countries who are undernourished. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii remit a copy of this resolution to the Hawaii Congressional Delegation; to the Honorable Senator Bob Dole, Chairman of the Agricultural Nutrition Committee; to the Honorable Senator Richard Lugar, Chairman on Agricultural Research and General Legislation; and to the Honorable Senator Jesse Helms, Chairman of the Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee.
