KIYOSAKI, Chief Engineer SUBJECT: BRIEFING - ALENAIO STREAM FLOOD CONTROL PROJECT Because the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had designed and constructed the Alenaio Stream Flood Control Project, we have asked the Corps to provide the briefing you had requested. On October 3, 1997 the Corps had formally agreed to make the presentation. This is to confirm that the briefing will be placed on your November 4, 1997 agenda and will begin at 9:00 a.m.. Chief Engineer Department of Public Works County of Hawaii 25 Aupuni Street, Room 202 Hilo, Hawaii 96720-4252 Dear Ms. Kiyosaki: In reference to your request for an information briefing on the Alenaio Stream Flood Control Project, we will be more than happy to update members of your Hawaii County Council on the functional aspects of our recently completed flood control project. We understand and share your concern regarding the recent flooding occurring on Kamehameha Avenue and Pauahi Street during the July 30, 1997 storm. However, to avoid any potential misconceptions on the purpose and actual operations of this project during future floods, our lead hydraulic engineer for this project will present and discuss the project's background, current design, and actual performance during the July 30, 1997 flood. Due to a previous commitment and the lead time required to obtain all necessary pertinent information a.id visual aids, we are requesting that the information briefing be delayed until last week in October or early November 1997. Mr. Jim Pennaz of my Civil Works Technical Analysis Section, Planning and Operations Division, will be the lead hydraulic engineer conducting this briefing. Thank you for your consideration on this matter. We hope to hear from you soon and wiil continue to provide technical assistance on matters pertaining to the Alenaio Stream Flood Control Project.
