WHEREAS, the sugar industry is vital to the economy of the
County of Hawaii ranking second only to the visitor industry; and
WHEREAS, besides employing more than 3,000 Big Islanders, the
sugar industry indirectly contributes to another 10,000 jobs in
businesses which support the plantations; and
WHEREAS, the sugar industry plays a major role in the County's
effort to achieve energy self-sufficiency by improving its bio -mass
operations and generating more than 400 of the Big Island's electricity
requirements; and
WHEREAS, the sugar industry in Hawaii and throughout the Nation
has incurred unprecedented financial losses due to depressed world
prices for sugar and the lack of an effective price support program
for domestic sugar producers; and
WHEREAS, the very survival of the sugar industry in the United
States hinges on the question of whether Congress will approve a
sugar loan provision in the 1981 Farm Bill.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII, STATE OF HAWAII, that it urges Congress to grant the sugar
industry similar consideration given other domestic crops by approving
a 17.5¢ per pound sugar loan provision in the 1981 Farm Bill.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that copies of this Resolution be
forwarded to the Honorable Jesse A. Helms, U.S. Senate, Washington,
D.C. 20510, and the Honorable E. dela Garza, House of Representatives,
Washington, D.C. 10515, Co -Chairmen of the Conference Committee; the
Honorable Walter D. Huddleston, U.S. Senate, Washington, D.C. 20510,
and the Honorable William C. Wampler, House of Representatives,
Washington, D.C. 10515, ranking minority members of the Conference
Committee; and Hawaii's Congressional Delegation.
