RESOLUTION NO. 143 9~
RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE EFFORTS OF THE NA`ALEHU
THEATRE IN APPLYING FOR A NATIONAL TELECOMMUNICATIONS
AND INFORMATION ADMINISTRATION GRANT.
WHEREAS, the National Telecommunications and Information
Administration (NTIA) administers the Public Telecommunications Facilities
Program (PTFP), which assists, through matching grants, in the planning and
construction of public telecommunications facilities; and
WHEREAS, for more than 30 years PTFP has played a major role in the
development of public broadcasting throughout the United States, and annually
awards approximately $13.5 million in grants and cooperative agreements; and
WHEREAS, PTFP supports the planning and construction of public
(noncommercial) radio and television stations, distance learning
telecommunications facilities, public telecommunications services and facilities
available to, operated by and controlled by minorities and women, and projects
which strengthen the capability of existing public TV and radio stations; and
WHEREAS, the Na`alehu Theatre, a nonprofit corporation, wishes to
obtain an NTIA grant for the development of a digital media telecommunications
center in Ka`u, Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, the center would be utilized to support emerging businesses
and to provide vocational training as was recommended in the EDA Ka`u
Economic Development Plan. Further, an extension of this telecommunications
initiative would be to provide interactive access between the Hawaii County
Council and the Ka`u community.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE
County OF HAWAII that the Hawaii County Council supports the Na`alehu
Theatre in their efforts to obtain an NTIA/PTFP grant for the development of a
public telecommunications project in Ka'u.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
transmitted to Mayor Stephen K. Yamashiro, and Mr. Joseph Demruelle, General
Manager of Na`alehu Theatre.
