HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 257 Draft 01 1980-1984RESOLUTION No. 257 81 WHEREAS, in Athens, West Virginia, on November 21, the University of Hawaii -Hilo women's volleyball team justified their national .Dumber One ranking by winning the 1981 National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics (IIAIA) Women's Volleyball Championship; and WHEREAS, this well-deserved victory, which is the second national collegiate title in three years for the Vulcans, was convincingly achieved by their defeating seven opponents in the 16 -team tournament; and WHEREAS, besides this prestigious championship, the Vulcan team also collected a host of other awards such as NAIA Coach -of -the -Year for Sharon Peterson; Tournament Most Valuable Player for Edie Manzano; First Team NAIA All-American for Alofa Taaafaese, Cynthia Whitworth, and Carla Carpenter; and Second Team NAIA All-American for Nalani Spencer; and WHEREAS, all of these honors attained reflect a highly motivated team of talented and dedicated players and coaches who this year put it together and reached the pinnacle of NAIA women's volleyball competition. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it proudly commends the University of Hawaii -Hilo Women's Volleyball Team for bringing glory, recognition and great pride to the school, themselves and their many supporters who have faithfully followed and supported the Vulcan women's volleyball program over the past exciting and rewarding years. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii be instructed to transmit true copies of this resolution to the victorious Vulcans including co -captains Carla Carpenter and Charlene Kahuanui; team members Shirley Ah Tou, Joy Downey, Kathy Hong, Pauahi Ioane, flarve Keama, Edie Manzano, Peka Malae, Sheryl Scott, Nalani Spencer, Alofa Tagataese and Cynthia Whitworth; Coach Sharon Peterson; Athletic Director Joey Estrella; Chancellor Stephen Mitchell and President Fujio I=iatsuda, along with its wishes for further success at the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Division II Tournament to be held in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on December 3, 4 and 5, 1981.
