WHEREAS, the Hawaii Community College will be observing its 40th
Anniversary on November 10, 1981, with a luncheon and an evening
open campus format; and
WHEREAS, the Hawaii Community College began in 1941 as the
Hawaii Vocational School, established by the Territorial Legislature
as a separately administered school, primarily responsible for the
vocational education of the youth of the Island of Hawaii and in
1970 became part of a statewide system of public higher education
institutions administered by the University of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, from its initial and modest listing of five trade
subjects, it currently offers 20 degree programs in Business,
General Education, Trade and Industry, and presently has an
enrollment of over 1800 students; and
WHEREAS, for the past 40 years, the purpose of the Hawaii
Community College has been to offer programs, courses, and
activities to fulfill the diverse educational training and community
needs of the residents of our Big Island and the State of Hawaii,
and has without question provided a needed and respected learning
facility and opportunities for self-improvement.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it recognizes the Hawaii Community College in its
attainment of 40 years of providing quality educational services
which has benefited thousands of people who have passed through the
HCC system which in turn has helped many different communities grow
and to prosper by their knowledge and skills.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that true copies of the resolution be
remitted with the Hawaii County Council's congratulations on the
advent of its 40th Anniversary to Dr. Fujio Matsuda, President,
University of Hawaii; Robert M. Fujimoto, Chairman, Board of
Regents; Mitsugu Sumada, Provost, Hawaii Community College; and
Stephen R. Mitchell, Chancellor, University of Hawaii at Hilo..
