WHEREAS, the 18th Annual Merrie Monarch Festival again brought
enjoyment to thousands of people who were entertained by a variety
of programs by many participants coming from within the State: of.
Hawaii and from the State of California; and
WHEREAS, this unique week-long Festival honors the memory of
King David Laamea Kalakaua, the last Hawaiian Monarch, who is
credited for the renaissance of the Hawaiian culture and arts; and
WHEREAS, the Merrie Monarch Festival recaptured much of the
spirit which prevailed during the reign of King David Kalakaua,`
1874-1891, through pageantry; song, dance and other activities; and
WHEREAS; the highlight of the week-long event culminated with
the thrilling performances of the halaus vying for the prestigious
honor and recognition of the Miss Aloha Hula, Hula Kahiko (ancient
hula) and the Hula Auwana (modern hula) competitions; and
WHEREAS, added to this year's program was the delightful per-
formance by the award-winning Tiare Otea, a Polynesian dance company
based in San Francisco, California, of the traditional and contem-
porary Hawaiian dance, Tahitian Aparima, Otea and drumming; and
WHEREAS, the success of the Merrie Monarch Festival in.the
re -birth of the ancient Hawaiian culture and arts, music and hula
can.be attributed to the dedication and untiring efforts of
Chairwoman Dorothy S. Thompson, who has nurtured the Festival into
the gala event that has enthralled Hawaii's residents and visitors.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it extends to all the participants and workers.its
heartfelt thanks, appreciation and congratulations for a job well
done.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Council extends a special
mahalo to Dorothy S. Thompson for undertaking the overwhelming task
of coordinating the Merrie Monarch Festival.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii"
be instructed to submit true copies of this resolution to
Dorothy S. Thompson, Chairwoman of the Merrie Monarch Festival,
and to Herbert T. Matayoshi, Mayor of the County of Hawaii.
